Aquaculture

Mahurangi Technical Institute's specialised aquaculture research, production and education facility was opened in May 2007 by NZ Fisheries Minister Jim Anderton. In this world-class facility, research is conducted on a number of fish species including endangered native fish as part of their preparation for reintroduction into the natural environment. As well as conducting ground-breaking research into the breeding of NZ Short Finned Eels, juvenile fish are also produced for use by fish farmers in NZ and overseas for growing on to market size.

Our Aquaculture courses are taught in classrooms alongside our research facilities allowing students to gain a full understanding by applying their theoretical studies to practical aquaculture. MTI is the only facility in New Zealand combining research and innovation with aquaculture education.

We can offer you the following:

Certificate in Aquatic Studies

Electric Fishing Certificate

Aquaculture Short Course Certificates:

  • Certificate in Aquatic Management
  • Certificiate in Aquatic Biology
  • Certificate in the Principles of Marine Ecology association with Aquaculture
  • Certificate in Aquatic Consents
