Maritime NZ Marine Licences
To operate a commercial inshore vessel the Maritime Rules require the skipper to hold an appropriate Maritime Licence:
Inshore Launchmaster (ILM)
Holders of the ILM may typically operate vessels of up to 20 metres within the Inshore Limits (generally up to 12 NM offshore and within 30 NM of a safe haven) and vessels over 20 metre within the Enclosed Water Limits. To sit for this licence the applicant must have 18 months seatime experience, including 6 months commercial seatime, and complete a recognised course.
Local Launch Operator (LLO)
Holders of the LLO can operate nominated vessels up to 20 metres within the designated areas endorsed on their licence. To sit for the LLO the applicant requires less seatime experience (typically 6 months with at least one month experience on the nominated vessel and endorsed areas). This course prepares mariners for Maritime New Zealand's Inshore Launchmaster/Local Launch Operator's Licence examinations, once they have completed the required sea time. The course covers the Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) syllabus and a NZQA 87-credit qualification awarded at Level 3.
Qualification
